English as second language program

Students join the English as a Second Language (ESL) program from:
  • Milpera English Language Preparation Centre at Chelmer.
  • local primary schools.
  • directly from overseas (students with prior English language instruction).

Junior school ESL Program (Years 8, 9 and 10)

New arrival ESL students spend some lessons in separate intensive ESL classes taught by  ESL teachers. In these classes, students receive explicit English language instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing and also learn the Australian curriculum. At the end of each semester, students’ English language proficiency is assessed using the ESL bandscales. As their English language improves, students gradually spend more time in mainstream classes, eventually joining all mainstream classes. ESL students in Years 8, 9 and 10 study English, Science and Study of Society in ESL classes.
