English as an Additional Language/Dialect

Students join the English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) program from:
  • Milpera English Language Preparation Centre at Chelmer.
  • local primary schools.
  • directly from overseas (students with prior English language instruction).

Junior school EAL/D Program (Years 7, 8, 9 and 10)

New arrival EAL/D students spend some lessons in separate intensive ESL classes taught by  EAL/D teachers. In these classes, students receive explicit English language instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing and also learn the Australian curriculum. At the end of each semester, students’ English language proficiency is assessed using the EAL/D bandscales. As their English language improves, students gradually spend more time in mainstream classes, eventually joining all mainstream classes. EAL/D students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 study English, Science and Study of Society in EAL/D classes.

EAL/D staff

The Head of Special Education Services (EAL/D Program), Mrs Ulrike Jurgensen, is supported by a dedicated team of specialist EAL/D teachers and teacher aides. Chinese speaking staff are available. A community liaison officer supports African families. For more information and enrolment enquiries, please contact Mrs Ulrike Jurgensen. Phone (07) 3323 8185 or email
