Senior school

Year 10 curriculum

The year 10 curriculum at Sunnybank State High School consists of four core subjects. English, Mathematics, Science and Study of Society and Environment, two elective subjects and the studies programme.

Year 11 and 12 curriculum

The Year 11 and 12 curriculum at Sunnybank State High School provides a number of different pathways for students to pursue their goals.

Students must select an English and at least one Mathematics subject and may then choose four elective subjects.

English as a second language (ESL) program

ESL students in the senior school are placed in mainstream classes. They receive English language instruction and support in a number of ways.

Year 11 and 12 English Communication classes for ESL students are taught by ESL teachers. An ESL teacher teaches the mainstream work program to a class of ESL students, while building in additional ESL instruction and utilising ESL teaching methods.

English for ESL learners is an academic mainstream English subject that satisfies the English language requirements university. This subject is delivered in collaboration with the English department

In addition support is provided for ESL students in some mainstream classes by ESL teachers and teacher aides.

Other programs for ESL students

Intensive mathematics program

This program helps students with interruptions to schooling to catch up on the Mathematics knowledge and understanding they have missed.

Small group reading program

ESL teachers and teacher aides work with small groups of students to improve reading.

Year 11 preparation program

Older new arrival students can receive additional time to develop the English language skills needed for Years 11 and 12.

ESL staff

The Head of Special Education Services (ESL Program), Mrs Laraine Goldman, is supported by a dedicated team of specialist ESL teachers and teacher aides. Chinese speaking staff are available.
