Specialised track and field program overview

The purpose of the Track and Field Development Program is to improve overall fitness of students at school and provide opportunities for students who have the ability and potential to excel in athletics.

In turn it will promote track and field in the wider community and make Sunnybank State High School more appealing for potential future students.

The program also provides students with a fitness and skills base for successful participation in other sports at Sunnybank State High School.

The program is divided into junior and senior levels. The junior program is be based around building a broad fitness base and learning technique and general principles of all track and field events.

Senior students will focus on specific event groups depending on their performance, as well as learn about track and field in depth through participation in theory lessons.

Within the junior and senior level, there are three tiers which are based on achieving certain results and students will be rewarded with a distinctive badge on achieving those targets.

The ultimate performance based goal is to achieve tier one at senior level by year 12. The tiered system is designed to encourage students to strive for excellence, become life-long active individuals and to ultimately increase representation numbers at state and national levels.

To be eligible for participation in the program students have to achieve tier three junior standard in one or more events.

Students are expected to demonstrate acceptable behaviour, attitude, uniform and academic standards.

All eligible students and their parents / guardians will be expected to sign a contract agreement and pay all fees or be on a payment plan at the beginning of the year. The current fee to join the program is $50.00 dollars. This will be used to cover the costs of buses, gym maintenance, QE II track use, a training shirt, a badge and a training diary.

Students accepted into the program have to maintain acceptable behaviour and academic standards and must comply with training requirements. Training sessions during school time are compulsory for all students. In addition, tier two and tier one students must attend one and two after or before school sessions.

All students in the program must participate in the School's track and field competitions throughout the year.

It is the responsibility of students to have correct uniform and sportswear for training sessions.

Students have to keep records of their training activities and have their training journal checked and signed by the teacher at the end of each week.

As a part of the program students will have access to professional coaching, the school facilities and sports equipment. Students will be able to participate in training camps and represent the school at athletics meets.
